Are you experiencing Covid-19 weight gain? Hong Kong resident Mothusi Majinda decided to “make the best of a bad situation” during the coronavirus pandemic in Hong Kong and get fit.
He says he lost 17kgs (37lbs) and is the healthiest he’s ever been.
“It’s been a tough year for everyone. People have gotten ill. Loss of loved ones. And I think there’s a lot of people who’ve just kind of put a pause on their lives and they’re waiting for life to get back to normal. But we don’t really know when that’s going to happen. So for me, rather than kind of wait indefinitely for things to get back to what it used to be like, I decided to kind of make a change now. So for me, it was fitness and I chose to make that fitness change over the past 7 months.”
The 28-year-old says socializing is what usually made him fall off the bandwagon in the past. But that wasn’t an issue during the lockdown.
“Given the lockdown, it made it much easier to kind of stick to the regiment, stick to the diet, stick to the program. There was no FOMO. There was nothing to try. There was nothing new and exciting to do. Everybody was at home. Instead of just staying home, I decided, alright, let me take this time to kind of make the best of a bad situation.”
The most important thing for him was the ability to adapt.
“I called my personal trainer. It started out as a training about 3 times a week. I got on a meal plan. So the really good thing about the meal plan is the food would just be delivered to my place. I just ate whatever came to my house and I started to see results. Then Covid kind of kicked in and gyms closed and had to adapt. So that’s when I started doing running. I hate running, but I couldn’t really think of anything else to do. So I started slowly, worked up to 5 km (3 miles), 10 km (6 miles). Then I guess I got the running bug and then by the end of it, I ran like a half marathon, an impromptu half marathon. The mask kind of mandatory mask for outdoor exercise came into effect. I tried running for a while with masks, but that just really wasn’t working too much for me. So I had to once again adapt. So that’s when we went to more and, you know, push-ups, sit-ups, jump rope. Theme of the year, adapt.”
But it hasn’t all been easy.
“I fell off the wagon many times. There’d be nights where I drink more than I should or I might have that cheeky pizza or whatever. The important thing is looking at it as a whole and seeing where I’ve come rather than, you know, focusing on those one those few points where I’ve fallen off the wagon. Don’t beat yourself up for messing up or not following the diet just at the soonest possible time try to get back on it and you’ll be fine.”
Mothusi hopes to inspire people through his transformation.
“I don’t know what’s more shocking the person before or the person after. Both are shocking in that I let it get to that point. Honestly, I’m just really proud of what I’ve managed to accomplish. I’d hope that through my story you can think of something you would like to accomplish with the last few months of 2020.”
