Myanmar’s detained government leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has appeared in court, and asked to be allowed to meet her lawyers in person.
Ms. Suu Kyi has been detained since the February coup in Myanmar and has been charged with various offences including violating a colonial-era official secrets act that could see her jailed for 14 years.
Widespread demonstrations have taken place across Myanmar since her detention and the military takeover, with many risking their lives to defy the junta. But how did the country get to this point?
Yvonne Yong looks back at how the military has managed to maintain power in Myanmar for so many decades.
