Hollywood legend Sir Sidney Poitier has died at the age of 94.

The Bahamian-American actor, director and activist became the first Black man and first Bahamian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964 for his performance in Lilies of the Field.

Poitier died on Thursday, Eugene Torchon-Newry, acting director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Bahamas, confirmed.

The ground-breaking actor, who transformed how Black people were portrayed on screen, was best known for his work during the ’50s and ’60s and in particular, for his performances in Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, In the Heat of the Night, and To Sir, With Love.
