Herta Müller is best known for her poetry, novels and essays depicting the difficulties of life in Romania under Nicolae Ceauşescu, who was president of the nation for 15 years, until 1989.
Romania-born Muller was described by the Nobel Foundation as:
“(she) who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed.”
Müller had been widely tipped as a leading contender for this year’s Nobel Prize: bookmakers had made her 3/1 joint favourite to lift the coveted award.
