Gympie boom leads to house price hike, population growth and tightening rental market | ABC News

ABC News (Australia) published this video item, entitled “Gympie boom leads to house price hike, population growth and tightening rental market | ABC News” – below is their description.

A famous gold mining town that saved Queensland from bankruptcy is experiencing a new rush of residents chasing a different natural treasure.

More than 150 years since James Nash struck gold, Gympie is experiencing a boom that is driving up property prices and putting the squeeze on the rental market.

David and Valerie Jacobs moved up from Brisbane at the end of last year after discovering the environment, affordability, and country hospitality.

“Just being able to walk down the street and a hold a conversation with someone that you really don’t know, it’s still got that rural feel and it’s got those rural values,” Mr Jacobs said.

“[People] have a lot more time for each other up here, whereas back in Brisbane … it was very insular.”

For the Jacobs, Gympie was like the Brisbane of decades ago.

“I think it was just time for us to get out of the rat race and move on,” Mr Jacobs said.
