Long one of Europe’s most troubled member states, Greece has stunned the world with its success in containing the coronavirus pandemic and protecting its population.
But the Mediterranean state is staring at a catastrophic downturn with 20 per cent of its economy dependent on tourism.
Now, in an effort to stave off the worst recession in a generation, Athens has reopened its borders to tourists from just 29 countries, including Australia.
