Global National: Sept. 23, 2023 | Canadian allies hesitant in response over tensions with India

Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: Sept. 23, 2023 | Canadian allies hesitant in response over tensions with India” – below is their description.

In tonight’s top story: Allies of Canada are hesitant to respond to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s accusations that agents of the Indian government are potentially linked to the killing of a Sikh man and Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, outside a B.C. temple last June. India is considered a much-needed ally for the West, despite its tensions with Canada.

On the country’s East coast, residents of Port-aux-Basques, Nfld. continue to struggle one year after a tropical storm, Fiona, devastated the small town and left many without homes. The continuous rising of the ocean and a dwindling amount of recovery funds have left the local government with no option but to close off certain areas of the community and rebuild only a select amount of homes.

Across the Atlantic, in Italy, Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has called for help from the United Nations following an influx of migrants in the country’s South islands. In the span of just one week, more than 11,000 immigrants arrived in Lampedusa — almost double the island’s population. Meloni, last year, pledged to cut down on immigration and is now facing heat in a wave of protests nationwide.

In the Canadian Rockies, intense heat and a devastating wave of droughts have sparked a historic glacial melt at the Athabasca glacier. The monumental glacier had a downward melt of more than nine metres this year. On top of that, a lack of rain has made the situation even worse.

Also, a capsule carrying samples from the asteroid Bennu is set to land in the Western U.S. on Sunday. The vessel is considered a feat of engineering that will give scientists something to study for years to come.
