Yocheved Lifshitz, an 85-year-old Israeli woman who was kidnapped and held hostage by Hamas for more than two weeks, is talking about her frightening ordeal. Jeff Semple reports on what Lifshitz endured, what the militants told her and how they treated her, as families of other hostages remain in agony waiting for word about their loved ones.

Israel is escalating its bombardment of the Gaza Strip, where more than two million people, including hundreds of Canadians, are trapped with little to no humanitarian aid. Dawna Friesen shares what some of the stranded Canadians are experiencing.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is debating the world’s response to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has killed thousands of people. Jackson Proskow reports on the fiery meeting, including what ministers said about the hostages and Gaza’s growing humanitarian crisis.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is preparing his country’s military for an invasion of the Gaza Strip to eliminate Hamas and rescue hundreds of hostages, but there are fears more people in Gaza could be killed during the operation. Redmond Shannon looks at how Netanyahu is weighing those risks alongside political pressures from inside and outside of Israel.

Hamas has addressed the Israeli hostage situation, where a spokesperson in Lebanon says the group is in talks with other countries to free more people from the Gaza Strip, but claims they want the conditions to be right and the airstrikes on Gaza to stop first. Crystal Goomansingh spoke with Ghazi Hamed, a member of the political bureau of Hamas in Gaza, about the hostages and Hamas’ violent conflict with Israel.

A Federal Court judge has approved a $23-billion settlement, the largest in Canadian history, for more than 300,000 First Nations children and their families who’ve suffered from the federal government’s chronic underfunding of on-reserve child welfare services. David Akin explains the significance of the historic agreement and what advocates say still needs to be done.
