Global National: Aug. 30, 2022 | Mikhail Gorbachev, final Soviet leader who ended Cold War, dies

Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: Aug. 30, 2022 | Mikhail Gorbachev, final Soviet leader who ended Cold War, dies” – below is their description.

The last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, has died at the age of 91. He was a towering figure, as the reforms he started brought about the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Iron Curtain, and eventually, the dissolution of a nation he ruled. He was seen as a hero to many in the West, but he leaves behind a complicated and polarizing legacy in Russia and across the former Soviet Union. Russian President Vladimir Putin has unravelled much of what Gorbachev did and stood for. Eric Sorensen reports.

Calls are growing for more immediate aid for flood-ravaged Pakistan, where unrelenting rain has washed away entire communities. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warns the nation faces a “monsoon on steroids.” As Redmond Shannon reports, the disaster is highlighting the tensions on the global climate response, as wealthier nations fall short on their promises.

As the climate crisis worsens, some of the world’s largest ice sheets in Greenland are rapidly melting, causing global sea levels to rise. Eric Sorensen explains how much zombie ice — areas of glaciers that are not being replenished with new ice as they melt — is driving up waters, and which Canadian communities are set to be directly affected.

A state of emergency has been declared in Jackson, Mississippi, where 150,000 people are without safe running water indefinitely. Neetu Garcha explains what caused the city’s treatment pumps to fail, and how this isn’t the first time the system has failed.

The widespread staffing shortage plaguing Canadian health care isn’t just isolated to hospitals. Many people are having a tough time finding a family doctor. Jeff Semple explains why practicing family medicine is proving unpopular among medical school graduates.

Consuming alcohol, even in small amounts, may pose a risk to your health, according to a new report from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction. Caryn Lieberman looks at the effects of drinking, the illnesses linked to it, and what doctors are being called.
