Gene Wilder: celebrated actor dies aged 83

He always insisted that he was not a funny man. But Gene Wilder was the star and the inspiration of some of the funniest films of his generation. Wilder – who has died, aged 83 – was perhaps best known for his role as Roald Dahl’s Wille Wonka.
