The Australian Workers’ Union is claiming a historic win this week after the Fair Work Commission essentially ruled the end of piecework payments for fruit and veg pickers.
The Commission agreed with the argument that they should instead be paid a minimum wage.
It found a substantial portion of the seasonal harvesting workforce were on piece rates. More than half were temporary migrant workers and this made them vulnerable to exploitation.
