At least three men who joined the Wagner mutiny were freed Russian prisoners, according to a Reuters investigation. With the Kremlin’s permission, the Wagner Group recruited prisoners to fight in Ukraine in 2022. When Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin became a fierce critic of the Russian military and abruptly launched an armed mutiny on June 17, 2023, some ex-prisoners reportedly retained their loyalty to Prigozhin and joined the rebellion.
