The Asian Games are now in full swing after a memorable opening ceremony as 12,417 athletes are ready to compete in 481 medal events in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province. In this edition of The Hub, Wang Guan is reporting from Hangzhou and talked to Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, president of the International Basketball Federation, to discuss some of the stunning moment at the opening ceremony. The Asian family once again gets together to celebrate friendship through sports, Al Thani says, as epitomized by the Asian Games slogan “Heart to Heart, @Future.” Al Thani talks about newly-retired Chinese basketball star Yi Jianlian’s legacy. Asked about China’s men’s basketball team, he says that “China can produce more than one Yao Ming” and that the team can make a comeback. Looking ahead, he reckons that the 3×3 “street basketball” format is the future and that basketball in Asia has enormous potential for development.
