Global News published this video item, entitled “Festival of Dogs: Nepalese shower pups with colour, treats during Tihar” – below is their description.
Dog lovers in Nepal celebrated man’s best friend on Monday by showering the canines with treats and adorning them in colourful garlands as part of the five-day festival, Tihar.
The Festival of Dogs, or Kukur Tihar, takes place on day two of the five-day Hindu festival devoted to animals, which originated in Nepal where street dogs are prevalent.
“Today they are worshipped, but the next day they are being left. If they get sick, people leave them,” said shelter owner Sheha Shrestha, explaining the need to raise animal welfare awareness among people in Nepal.
During the festive period, it is considered a sin to act disrespectfully to dogs or any of the other animals that are honoured.
