South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Endangered wild Asian elephant population in China doubles amid conservation efforts” – below is their description.
The population of the Asian elephant in China’s southwestern Yunnan province has doubled from 150 to 300 in the past 30 years. Since 1986, it has been listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Asian elephants are under threat due to a shrinking habitat as a result of farming and urban growth. Their plight was highlighted in 2021 when a group of wild Asian elephants went on a months-long trek from their forest home across southwest China in search of a new habitat.
