The Commonwealth Department of Health has this morning approved a drive-through COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs’ spiritual home, Belmore Sports Ground. Belmore GP Dr Rifi Jamal says he welcomes the news, and says the clinic will operate on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
“We are only limited by the amount of vaccine that we are allocated,” Dr Rifi said, and urges the premier to allocate more vaccines to the area. “If she can actually allocate more vaccines for us, on top of what the Commonwealth Government’s given us, we will be operating seven days a week, not just three days.”
The City of Canterbury Bankstown Council, Bulldogs League Club and SES have provided volunteering and financial support to cover costs of contractors and traffic controllers. “All that we need now for NSW Health to assist us for the other days so we can vaccinate as many as we can in the shortest possible of time,” Dr Rifi said.
He also called on Premier Gladys Berejiklian to visit the area to “see firsthand what’s been happening here”. “Chris (Minns) mentioned about the economic aspect and the impact in this area, but let me tell you, there is a heavier price that we are paying and that is the mental effect on a lot of our people.”
