Protests against the government of Kazakhstan have turned deadly as dozens were reportedly killed in a night of fires and clashes between protesters and security forces on January 5, 2022. The unrest began on January 2, when demonstrators took to the streets protesting against soaring fuel prices. The demonstrations led to the government’s resignation, but the unrest continued to intensify with several government buildings seized and set ablaze. The country’s president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev blamed the protests on “terrorists” and requested help from the Russia-led military alliance, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation. The armed peacekeeping troops from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have since been deployed to Kazakhstan.
