Informal comments to the media made by José A. Blanco, Permanent Representative of Dominican Republic to the United Nations, on the situation in Haiti.
Dominican Ambassador José Alfonso Blanco Conde today (8 Jul) told journalists outside the Security Council that the Council “should have invited” the Dominican Republic to participate in discussions on the crisis in Haiti “in an active manner as we would be the most affected if this crisis overflows Haiti’s borders.”
Blanco Conde said, “faced by the magnitude of what has happened, the crisis in Haiti – a country with which we share an extensive land border – we understand that the Security Council should have invited our country to participate in an active manner as we would be the most affected if this crisis overflows Haiti’s borders.”
The Ambassador called for “a robust mission in Haiti in order to help the Haitian people reestablish – of course – the peace, that I am sure they need a lot at this point.”
He said, “we have seen how the MINUSTAH went down, then MINUJUSTH, now the BINUH, and well, we just saw what happened two days ago.”
Responding to a reporter’s question, Blanco Conde said, “we don’t have any confirmation that neither of the perpetrators came from the Dominican Republic or escaped to the Dominican Republic. At this point we don’t have that information. The authorities in Haiti are working on that and I am sure we are going to have information about that soon.”
The United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) was replaced in 2017 by the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUSJUSTH) which in turn was replaced by the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) in 2019.
