South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Death by dowry? Investigation after bodies of 3 sisters and 2 children found in well” – below is their description.
An investigation is under way after the bodies of three sisters and two of their children were found in a well in the village of Dudu village in the north Indian state of Rajasthan on May 31, 2022. The deaths of siblings Kalu, Kamlesh and Mamta Meena and their children have been linked to a dispute over dowries, an illegal practice where often hefty sums are paid by Indian parents to marry off their daughters. Relatives of the victims said the sisters had married brothers from the same household and lived under the same roof, but suffered constant violent attacks at the hands of their husbands and in-laws. The abuse worsened when the father of the women failed to meet demands for more money. India outlawed the paying of dowries more than 60 years ago.
