Cost of living at Christmas: inside the UK’s warm banks

Channel 4 News published this video item, entitled “Cost of living at Christmas: inside the UK’s warm banks” – below is their description.

Between the cold weather, a cost of living crisis and soaring energy bills – this Christmas is forcing families to make tough choices and sacrifices. But some communities have created safe spaces for vulnerable people this winter – these are Britain’s warm banks.

The UK economy is in recession and bills for every household across the country are soaring. Leaving many unable to afford to heat their homes properly. It’s estimated more than 8 million people will be in fuel poverty by April 2023, and many are choosing between buying presents for their families or heating their homes this Christmas.

We visited three Warm Banks in Barnsley and Gateshead to speak to the volunteers and those using the community spaces for warmth, a warm meal, singing Christmas songs or just for some company and a shoulder to cry on.
