World Health Organization (WHO) officials provided an update on the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday.
WHO’s technical lead for COVID-19 Maria Van Kerkhove discussed a new strain of the virus found in South Africa and dubbed the 501Y.V2 variant, saying that there’s no evidence at this point that the new strain has an increased transmissibility when compared to the strain found in the United Kingdom. She says there are many studies under way in South Africa at the moment.
U.K. scientists expressed concern on Monday that COVID-19 vaccines being rolled out in Britain may not be able to protect against a new variant of the coronavirus that emerged in South Africa and has spread internationally.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general said members of their international scientific team are on their way to Wuhan, China to study the origins of COVID-19, but that Chinese officials have informed WHO that they have yet to organize the necessary permissions for their arrival.
