Global News published this video item, entitled “Coronavirus: Lebanon security forces clash with protesters amid anti-lockdown demonstrations” – below is their description.
For a third night on Wednesday, Lebanon security forces clashed with protesters in Tripoli who are angry over a coronavirus lockdown. Witnesses and local media claimed riot police fired live bullets into the crowd as demonstrators tried to storm the city’s government building.
Police have not immediately commented on whether live rounds were fired, but Reuters footage shows sparks hitting the ground and the sound of gunfire.
Protesters railed against a strict lockdown, which many say has left them with no means to survive amid the ongoing economic collapse. The government imposed a 24-hour lockdown earlier this month in a bid to curb the COVID-19 outbreak, which has killed approximately 2,500 people.
The financial meltdown in Lebanon, which crashed the currency, poses the greatest risk to Lebanon’s stability since the 1975-1990 civil war.
