For the second day in a row, daily Covid-19 infections in the U.S. topped 50,000 after 56,800 new cases were reported Thursday, jumping the most since May 9 as all but 10 states showed an upswing in cases.
The CDC on Thursday forecast as many as 160,000 people could die from the virus by July 25, and 11 states are likely to report more deaths in the next month than the previous four weeks.
Ahead of the holiday weekend, some states are calling off Fourth of July celebrations out of fears they could be super-spreader events. Likewise, young Americans are increasingly partying especially hard, contributing to the virus’s spread. Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned the pathogen may be mutating in a way that may make it easier to spread.
Four U.S. states reported a combined 25,000 new cases Thursday:
Arizona reported 3,333 new cases, an increase of 4% to 87,425. Deaths increased by 37, to a total of 1,757.
California cases rose 1.7% to 240,195 while deaths rose 1.2% to 6,163, according to the state’s website.
Florida reported 169,106 cases, up 6.4% from a day earlier, and imposed an overnight curfew for Miami-Dade County.
Texas recorded its second-worst day of the pandemic with 7,915 new cases, and ordered residents to wear masks.
In the meantime, three vaccine candidates are “looking really, really good” in trials, President Trump said Thursday, adding, three more vaccines will begin trials “shortly,” without elaborating.
