A last-minute landmark deal with global resonance has been finally approved at the COP28 in Dubai. Nearly 200 countries reached an unprecedented climate agreement with a decisive shift away from fossil fuels. Are these commitments the much-needed lifeline steering humanity away from the ominous point of no return? Can collective and global endeavors truly rewrite the narrative of the environmental crisis? In this edition of The Hub, Wang Guan talks to Wu Changhua, China director of the Office of Jeremy Rifkin and vice chair of the Governing Council at the Asia Pacific Water Forum, and Ma Jun, director of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs, who both participated in the first week of the UN climate meeting. Also in the program, Dimitri De Boer, director for Asia at ClientEarth. They discuss the main highlights of COP28 agreement and how this deal will be implemented. How realistic are some of its commitments? They also look at China-U.S. cooperation on climate and how instrumental recent developments have been in clinching that historic deal. They warn that the global community shouldn’t lose sight of the 1.5 degree Celsius target and should continue to focus on renewables and green technologies. And they look into China’s impressive contribution to climate action. Can the world take a page from China’s multifaceted approach on climate and energy transition?
