COP28 has convened in Dubai, but Western headlines have cherry picked the sound bite of COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber saying, “We must look for ways and ensure the inclusion of the role of fossil fuels.” However, this phrase is merely in the context that the climate transition cannot be weaned off fossil fuels overnight. It also distracts from the pivotal dialogue taking place in Dubai that will turn the world’s climate crawl into a climate action run. In this edition of The Hub, Wang Guan spoke to several world leaders and entrepreneurs to uncover how this COP will be more consequential than the previous COPs. Haris Doukas, Athens’ Mayor-elect, said, “we need strong decisions to keep below the two degrees threshold. With the hottest July and August on record, expectations are high, but the window of opportunity is low. We need to go from theories to actions.” Doukas for his part wants to increase vegetation, reduce pollution and make Athens more pedestrian-centric. Elsewhere, Ben Harburg, Member of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, explains that China’s leadership in manufacturing solar, hydro and wind power means that if China is not engaged, nothing will get done. He adds, “U.S. cannot meet climate targets without Chinese products.”
