Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng called on support for US President Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention on August 26, 2020. The visually impaired human rights activist urged other countries to join Trump’s “fight for our future” and to stop Chinese Communist Party “aggression”. Chen, who is known for speaking out against forced abortions under China’s one-child policy, fled to the US in 2012 with the help of American diplomats during the administration of former president Barack Obama. His escape sparked a diplomatic crisis between Beijing and Washington.
