China’s military drills an excuse to prepare for invasion, Taiwan’s foreign minister says

Global News published this video item, entitled “China’s military drills an excuse to prepare for invasion, Taiwan’s foreign minister says” – below is their description.

Taiwan’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that China’s military drills it launched in protest against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit was really an excuse to prepare for an invasion of the self-ruled island.

“China has used the drills in its military playbook to prepare for the invasion of Taiwan,” Joseph Wu said, adding “China’s real intention behind these military exercises is to alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and the entire region.”

Wu, who offered no timetable for a possible invasion of Taiwan, which is claimed by China as its own, said Taiwan would not be intimidated even as the drills continued with China often breaching the unofficial median line down the Taiwan Strait.

In This Story: Taiwan

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
