Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau provided an update on the country’s COVID-19 response on Tuesday.
He was joined by Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Public Services and Procurement Minister Anita Anand, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam and deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo.
Trudeau reassured Canadians on Friday that millions more COVID-19 vaccine doses are on the way, while also announcing a major booster shot deal with Pfizer.
The prime minister said almost two million doses will arrive this week, including the first 300,000 Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses.
Trudeau also announced a deal with Pfizer for 35 million booster shots for next year and 30 million for the year after. The deal with Pfizer includes options to add 30 million shots for 2022 and 2023 and an option for 60 million shots in 2024.
A day after cancelling all flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days due to variants of concern, the prime minister also said passengers arriving on non-direct flights from those countries would have to provide a negative COVID-19 test upon departure.
