Canada’s pet rescue organizations are struggling to cope with an unprecedented surge in demand, as more families abandon their pets due to the high cost of care.
The situation has forced several shelters to close their intake, leaving many pets in need of homes.
According to Deanna Thompson, the executive director of the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS), pet abandonment numbers have reached new heights since March — making it difficult for Canadians who are already financially drained.
