After a tumultuous 24 hours, the British prime minister Boris Johnson has faced the rebellion in his own ranks and resigned. In recent days more than 50 members of his own cabinet and parliamentary offices had told Mr Johnson he no longer enjoyed their support and had resigned en masse. Despite the turmoil, Mr Johnson has already appointed a number of new ministers to fill the posts left empty by some who once described themselves as close allies of the prime minister.
mr johnson said whoever takes over will have his full backing.
