Global News published this video item, entitled “Bill C-18: Canadian government responds as Google, Meta set to remove news links in Canada” – below is their description.
Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez will provide an update on the government’s work to implement the Online News Act, also known as Bill C-18, a new law forcing digital giants to compensate media outlets for the content they share or otherwise repurpose online.
Google and Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, have both said they will remove news links in Canada because of the government’s new law, which was approved by the Senate upper chamber in June and will come into effect by the end of this year.
The legislation outlines rules to force platforms such as Facebook and Alphabet’s Google to negotiate commercial deals and pay news publishers for their content, a move similar to a ground-breaking law passed in Australia in 2021.
U.S. tech companies have said the proposals are unsustainable for their business.
Google has said that it will also remove news links from Google News, a personalized aggregator, and Google Discover, a mobile-phone feature that helps people find content online.
The company says it will also end Google News Showcase in Canada, a product it uses to license news from over 150 local publishers.
