FRANCE 24 English published this video item, entitled “Belgian king expresses ‘deepest regrets’ to Congolese over brutal colonial rule • FRANCE 24” – below is their description.
Belgium’s King Philippe expressed his “deepest regrets” for his nation’s abuses in its former colony Congo, telling lawmakers Wednesday on his first official trip to the country that Belgian rule was unjustifiable and racist. For more analysis, joining FRANCE 24 is Pedro Monaville, Historian of modern Africa and Assistant Professor of History at NYU in Abu Dhabi. He says that the Belgian king could have gone even further in expressing his contrition over Belgium’s brutal colonial rule in DR Congo. However, a commission in Belgium has not yet published its results on the country’s colonial past, and so Mr. Monaville believes that the king was quite limited in what he could express to the Congolese people. “I’m not totally surprised that he reiterated the words that he already published two years ago.”
