Last week’s mass shooting in Georgia, in which six of the eight fatalities were Asian-American women, sounded the alarm over racist crimes. The group Stop A.A.P.I. Hate revealed last week nearly 3,800 incidents were reported over roughly a year amid the pandemic. Also in the summer of 2020, the Stop A.A.P.I. Hate Youth Campaign interviewed 990 young Asian-American adults across the U.S. about their experiences during the pandemic, finding that one in four reported experiencing racism in some way. Children said they were bullied, physically harassed, and took the brunt of racial slurs. So what’s fueling the surge in hate crimes? And how can Asian-Americans ward off racist attacks?
