Critics of Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita gathered in the capital Bamako on Tuesday amid reports of a possible military coup in the West African country.
Cheick Traore, a supporter of the opposition in Mali, was one of several celebrating in Bamako’s Independence Square and spoke about the situation in the country.
Traore said the president “should have listened to the people.”
Unrest kicked off earlier in the day on Tuesday in the garrison town of Kati, where a previous coup originated under similar circumstances eight years ago. The soldiers took weapons from the armory and detained senior military officials.
Soldiers also surrounded the private residence of the president, deepening fears of a coup attempt following months of protests calling for his resignation.
