Family and friends of Andrew Brown Jr. gathered on Monday for his funeral in Elizabeth City, N.C. nearly two weeks after the 42-year-old Black man was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies. They were joined by members of the George Floyd family.
Elton Ferebee, a relative of Andrew Brown Jr., said that he was “the coolest cousin.”
Brown’s cousin said that about two months ago his girlfriend convinced him to go get a pedicure and he posted a photo on Facebook and that the 42-year-old reached out and told him, “I’m getting my feet done, too.”
Jha’rod and Khail Ferebee, Brown’s eldest sons, briefly spoke during the funeral and remembered their father as their best friend and thanked the community for standing with them.
Sandra White, a relative of Andrew Brown Jr. who also spoke on behalf of Brown’s sons, remembered Brown as a good father who was trying to do what was best for his family.
“I do know him as a very good person, did nobody no harm,” White said during Brown’s funeral.
Brown’s shooting came within a day after Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was found guilty of Floyd’s murder.
Both attorney Ben Crump and Reverend Al Sharpton called on police to release the bodycam footage regarding Brown’s death. Crump said Brown was killed “unjustifiably” just as people were celebrating the Derek Chauvin verdict.
Rev. Al Sharpton renewed calls for racial justice and called on the U.S. Congress to pass police reform bill.
