Officials in Alberta are set to provide an update Friday on the wildfire situation in the province as dozens of new wildfires were discovered amid high temperatures and dangerously dry conditions on Thursday.
More than 10,000 people across Alberta are now affected in some way by mandatory evacuation orders.
There were many Alberta Emergency Alerts issued and updated throughout the day Thursday as the fires grew and threatened more properties. As of Friday morning, there were 79 active fires in the province with 19 being out of control.
The entire town of Drayton Valley and rural properties in Brazeau County were told to evacuate late Thursday night, while parts of the county surrounding Athabasca, north of Edmonton, were also told to leave.
Earlier on Thursday, the community of Entwistle in Parkland County was told to get out just a day after people were allowed to return to their homes after being told to leave over the weekend due to a wildfire.
Meanwhile, in northeastern Alberta a wildfire destroyed at least one home and triggered evacuations on the Cold Lake First Nation and an evacuation order was issued late in the afternoon for part of Lac Ste. Anne County.
In the far northwestern tip of Alberta, several thousand people were told to flee Fox Lake and the Little Red River Cree Nation because of a fire that flared out of control overnight. By the evening, the province said at least 20 homes, the police station and the Northern Store had been lost in Fox Lake.
