Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw will provide and update on the COVID-19 response in the province on Thursday ahead of the May long weekend.
Thursday’s update comes after 908 new COVID-19 cases were identified on Wednesday. While new case numbers have come down in the last week or so, the positivity rate in Alberta was at 9.1 per cent Wednesday.
There were 685 people in hospital with COVID-19 on Wednesday, 185 of whom were being treated in intensive care.
Education minister Adrianna LaGrange also announced on Wednesday that most students in grades K-12 would be returning to in-class learning starting on Tuesday.
The only exception will be students in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo where the province is targeting a May 31 return to in-classroom learning.
LaGrange said case numbers in the RMWB, which includes Fort McMurray, have not trended downward at the same rate as they have in other regions of the province, which means “a higher likelihood of continued operational challenges in those schools.”
