Albania’s COVID-19 response exposes healthcare system weaknesses

Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “Albania’s COVID-19 response exposes healthcare system weaknesses” – below is their description.

Albania says it has achieved herd immunity through infections, cutting coronavirus transmission dramatically.

Nevertheless, it has come at a terrible cost for under-resourced and overwhelmed hospitals.

Officially, fewer than 2,500 people have died of COVID-19 in Albania but the US-based Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimates the figure at nearly 16,000, because that is how many more people died there in the past nine months than would normally have died in the same period.

Al Jazeera’s John Psaropoulos reports from the capital, Tirana.
