Canadians continue to work in an effort to provide help and safe evacuation for Afghans who worked with our military – as interpreters and guides. But a deadline looms for when the U.S. plans to end its operations in the country.
That could result in the evacuation missions of other countries to collapse.
Staying behind almost certainly condemns these Afghans to death at the hands of the Taliban and while some have made it out, as Mike Armstrong explains, others are still pleading for help from Canadian soldiers who are now outside of Kabul’s airport.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden is still sticking to the Aug. 31 deadline, even after a discussion with G7 leaders who pushed for an extension.
The president continues to project calm, even as the world is witness to chaotic and desperate scenes at the airport in Kabul. Jackson Proskow has more on what’s taken place so far, including a surprise meeting between the Taliban and the head of the CIA, as well as the impact the crisis has had on Biden’s popularity.
