Following U.S. President Joe Biden’s visit to Vietnam on Sunday, both countries have upgraded their relationship to a “comprehensive strategic partnership,” thus burying the hatchet once and for all and shifting from being bitter foes five decades ago to becoming strategic partners. Even though President Biden explicitly said that it wasn’t about trying to start a “cold war” with China, concerns about stability in the region are mounting. So what’s in it for Vietnam? How will this deal impact China-Vietnam relations?
In this edition of The Hub, Wang Guan talks to Lim Tai Wei, adjunct research fellow at the National University of Singapore; to Klaus Larres, distinguished professor of History and International Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and to Rong Ying, vice president of the China Institute of International Studies, to discuss the rationale behind this momentous move. China has been Vietnam’s major trading partner for years and the long-standing friendship between the two countries will not be impacted, says Rong Ying. Lim tells Wang Guan what the U.S. and Vietnam will gain economically and strategically from this elevated relationship and describes Vietnam’s strategy as “omni-directional.” And Larres reckons that Vietnam is trying to become somehow “more neutral” in the great power competition.
