To mark 80th anniversary of de Gaulle’s call to resist Nazis, French President Emmanuel Macron attended a ceremony with British leaders in London. “De Gaulle was a French officer, soon to be stripped of his rank, of his property and of his nationality by the Vichy regime after arriving in London on June 17th. He was immediately received by Winston Churchill. The Old Lion & the Royal Family offered asylum to the man they recognized, almost by instinct, as the legitimate emissary of France, as the ambassador of its values. At that moment, British monarchy became the refuge of the French republic”, Macron said in his speech.
