100-year-old battle tactic: Russian soldiers catch Ukrainian troops off guard after breaching trench. Russian troops tunnelled under a Ukrainian trench and blew it up, reviving a First World War tactic not seen in Europe for 100 years. Putin’s men then attacked through the blast hole, and succeeded in driving the Ukrainians back with the help of FPV drones. It is the first time that the tactic has been caught on film in Ukraine. Sappers were used by both sides in WW1 to undermine each-other’s trenches, with teams forced to work in silence to avoid detection.
