JUDGE DAVID WOLFE
FACTS: The trial for Steven Wiggins, the man charged with first degree murder in the 2018 shooting death of Dickson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Daniel Baker, has been delayed again, this time until next summer (2021).
The attorneys for Wiggins argued in their 80-page motion that Wiggins’ defense team has been unable to complete critical psychological testing for the case and that COVID-19 “continues to render it impossible to conduct a capital trial that both protects Mr. Wiggins’ constitutional rights to a fair trial and ensures the safety and well being of all participants.”
Dickson County Circuit Court Judge David Wolfe granted the motion from Wiggins’ attorney, Jim Simmons of Hendersonville.
The trial is now set to begin July 26, 2021.
District Attorney Ray Crouch filed a motion objecting to the continuance and also filed for a “speedy trial on behalf of the victim.”
