Obituary: Loleatta Holloway

Loleatta Holloway, the famed disco and soul singer from Chicago, has passed away age 64. Best known for the dancefloor fillers “Hit and Run”, “Love Sensation” and the vocals for “Relight My Fire”, the former Gospel singer started out with the Holloway Community Singers.

Epitomising the sound of the seventies, Holloway had chart topping hits with a number of singles, but most famously gained exposure when her vocals were sampled for “Ride on Time” by Black Box in 1989. Her uncredited voice led to a successful lawsuit and undisclosed settlement for the singer. What was essentially a remix became the best selling single of 1989.

Holloway was also sampled heavily for Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch – “Good Vibrations” which was number 1 in the US. The line “Sweet Sensation” was also echoed in the Chase & Status track “Blind Faith” which was released in 2011.
