UKTV: “Identity” Episode 2 on ITV

The Identity team get called in after a British backpacker (Laura Aikman) is found murdered. Her passport has been used by an identical looking young woman to enter the UK.

Maverick former undercover officer, Bloom (played by Aiden Gillen), is hot on the tail of the emotionally damaged fraudster but soon cuts some major corners to get results. Fellow policeman Anthony begins to have doubts about the Bloom’s methods and begins to plot against him.

Joanne Froggatt plays the versatile identity of Jane Calshaw with accomplished skill, expertly balancing accents, personalities and nervous energy.

For those who like police drama, the information-by-numbers at Identity HQ could well become somewhat obvious, along with the sub-plot concerning Bloom’s double life.

However, the twists and turns of multiple characters and identities in each episode carry the programme forward regardless. Excellent Saturday night viewing.

Identity” – episode 2  – airs on Saturday 10th July 2010 at 9pm on ITV1.
