OWN published this video item, entitled “Tiger Woods on Being a Black Golfer on the PGA Tour | The Oprah Winfrey Show | Oprah Winfrey Network” – below is their description.
Legendary golf pro Tiger Woods won his first major championship, twelve strokes ahead of runner-up Tom Kite, at the 1997 Masters. The margin of victory (as of 2021) is still the largest in the tournament’s history. Later that year, Tiger sat down with Oprah to discuss his record-shattering win—and how it feels to have his life forever changed by the victory. He says he owes much of his success to his father, Earl Woods, a former Green Beret, who taught him the kind of mental toughness and preparedness that’s required to win it all. He also pays homage to Lee Elder, the first African-American to play in the Masters Tournament in 1975, and the countless other Black athletes who paved the way for him.
