Richard and Susanna talk exclusively to Shamima Begum. In 2015, she left the UK aged 15 to join ISIS. She was found, nine months pregnant, in a Syrian refugee camp in February 2019 and the then home secretary, Sajid Javid, cancelled her British citizenship on security grounds.
Susanna and Richard question Shamima’s intentions and her reasoning why she left the UK to join ISIS. She tells them she’s asking the British people to forgive her claiming she ‘thought she was ‘doing the right thing as a Muslim’ by joining ISIS and she ‘did not want to hurt anyone’. She asks for the British public to ‘forgive’ her and says she sympathises with people because she has ‘lived in fear of ISIS and lost loved ones because of ISIS.’
