Golden Carriage Ride is Queen Margrethe II’s Last Public Appearance

The Royal Family Channel published this video item, entitled “Golden Carriage Ride is Queen Margrethe II’s Last Public Appearance” – below is their description.

This is Queen Margrethe II’s last public appearance before she abdicates later this month.

The Queen of Denmark took a short trip in a special golden carriage only used once a year for a New Year’s ceremony. The half mile journey took the Queen from her current home in Amalienborg to the Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. Thousands braved the freezing temperatures to cheer her along.

Queen Margrethe surprised many around the world by announcing her abdication on New Year’s Eve. The Danish Queen is Europe’s longest-reigning living monarch, having reigned for more than 51 years.

The monarch will be succeeded by her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik. Frederik and his wife Mary will be proclaimed King and Queen on 14 January. Danish monarchs do not have coronation ceremonies.
