GMB has accessed figures through a Freedom of Information request which show there were more than 4,000 reports of crimes involving children attacking parents during lockdown (4284). That’s a 25% increase on the same period last year (March-June). The real figure will be much higher as not all police forces record such crimes, and only half responded to GMB’s request. Plus many families will have been unlikely to call police at the height of the pandemic. Charities say the government’s response (announcing £2m for domestic violence charities 19 days into lockdown) is too little too late, and doesn’t recognise child-to-parent abuse. Meanwhile, a report by the Universities of Oxford and Manchester, out today, says that 70% of parents, who have experienced child and adolescent-to-parent violence, saw an increase in violent episodes during lockdown.
