Sichuan Declares Highest Emergency Alert Level Amid Floods

Aug.18 — Sichuan province declared its highest emergency alert level in response to unprecedented floods along the Yangtze River, China’s longest, state media Xinhua reported. The country has been battered by severe floods since June, affecting more than 63 million people and resulting in 178 billion yuan ($26 billion) worth of economic damage, according to a posting on the Ministry of Emergency Management’s website.
